Crossword
How it works
-
1
Choose the language and the number of letters of the word you are looking for.
-
2
Boxes appear: fill in the ones whose letter you already know (from crossing words), leave the rest empty.
-
3
Enter the clue for the word you are looking for: words whose stored definition is close to it appear in the results, the others stay available further down, under "Also match the pattern" (nothing is ever hidden).
-
4
Run the search: click a word in the list to see its definition and check it fits.
How crosswords work
In a crossword grid, the answer to each clue is a word of a known length that shares some of its letters with the words crossing it. The more of those crossing letters you've already filled in, the fewer words remain possible for the one you're looking for.
Tips
- Always start with the answers you're sure of, even short ones: every confirmed letter narrows down the crossing words.
- Clues in the plural, or with an article ("The..."), give a hint about the grammatical form of the word you're looking for.
- A clue in quotation marks or written very informally often signals an expression rather than a single word.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use the tool above?
Enter the length of the word you're looking for, any letters you already know at their exact position, and the clue exactly as it appears in your grid. The tool ranks results by how well they match the clue.
Why do some suggested words have no definition?
The tool also shows words that match the letter pattern even without a definition on file, so it never keeps you from finding a word you already know.
